Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) W. G. Craib ex Hartwich
Family: Styracaceae
Part used: Gum
THE PLANT
Benzoin from Laos is the balsamic resin from the Styrax tonkinensis trees perched on the high plateaus of Laos. When the trunk of Styrax tonkinensis is cut, benzoin “tears” drip down the trunk like crystallized, caramel-toned candies. The styrax benzoin tree is a fast-growing tree that reaches maturity in its tenth year. The very hard resin, a symbol of prosperity and purification, is blended into rich perfume compositions, releasing a balsamic fragrance with vanilla accents.
